Will there be a sales pitch?
Presented by Merle Davenport, Oklahoma Department of Corrections
Why do some students quit after failing a test? Why do other students use failure as motivation to work harder? How a student responds to failure can make the difference between graduating and dropping out.
Students with a Fixed Mindset believe that they either have the ability to achieve something or they don't. Once they fail, they quit trying because they just don't have those skills. Students with a Growth Mindset believe their skills can be developed, that their IQ is not a fixed number. These students use failure as a stepping stone to success. In this seminar, participants will learn how to use the Growth Mindset Theory in their classrooms. Students need to know how to learn and grow from failure so they are empowered to step out of their comfort zone and see challenges as opportunities.

Drive Your Car
Presented by Joni O'Neil, Coach Joni O
Life is filled with challenging experiences from beginning to end. People are facing issues with work and personal relationships, performance, expectations, finances, health and more. This can create a mix of emotions from fear, frustration and distress to overwhelm. These emotions can last as long as they are allowed to. The Drive Your Car concept can bring clarity to one’s true desires, help them recognize their internal strengths and understand what is possible and how to move forward with confidence in life.
This presentation focuses on using an analogy that everyone is familiar with to understand their body, heart, brain and how they work together and against each other. The concept of a CAR (body), a DRIVER (self) and a MAP (thought processing tool) is easy to understand, and audiences have found it very helpful and effective.

Reading is a skill that is important for learners across all instructional levels and subjects; however, not all Adult Education instructors have had specialized training in how to teach reading at all or specifically, academic reading across the disciplines. For our learners to be successful in establishing foundational skills and a solid academic knowledge base, it is important to train teachers in the “how-to” of teaching not only basic reading skills but also the more advanced skills needed to help the struggling readers. The struggling readers are those who miss the GED by just a few points in any subject that is reading intensive like science, social studies, literature and even math. While reading is an important subject, a student-centered approach of integrating writing as a part reading will be included in the training. Handouts will be provided.

Do you want to teach English pronunciation more confidently in an easier and more efficient manner than ‘listen and repeat’?
Did you know that the language part of your brain (Broca’s area) actually hides sounds that are not in your native language? That’s why ‘listen and repeat’ is not an effective way to teach pronunciation. The Color Vowel® approach helps bypass Broca's area through the use of the visual, musical and kinesthetic areas of the brain so students can produce and hear English sounds not in their native language.
In this 75-minute session we will…
--answer the 2 key pronunciation questions for comprehensibility
--organize vocabulary for independent learner practice
Join us for a basic introduction to Color Vowel®, an approach supported by brain-based research, using hands-on activities which can be quickly integrated into your ESL lessons.

Will there be a sales pitch? Free resources available through your public library
Presented by Deedra O'Donnell, Oklahoma City Community College
Adult learners often choose to study online for convenience. They may have a busy work schedule, live in a distant location, or be caring for young children at home. In addition, some students may also have barriers with accessibility to necessary technology, socioeconomic struggles, and more. Our goal is to make the most out of our class time and to reach every student to the best of our abilities. To prevent lessons from becoming teacher-centered and mundane, we will provide tips on how to keep lessons student-centered and engaging.

As a nonprofit, how did you choose the tools you are using? Do you have a technology plan in place for your short-term and long-term needs, and if not, do you know how to craft one?
Understanding or clarifying your business processes is the first step to a solid technology plan. The tools you use should support your business processes, not dictate them. Whether you’re looking for new tools or wanting to understand how to better use what you have, this session is for you!
In this session, participants will evaluate examples of common software for fundraising, accounting, program management, volunteers, and outreach and understand what business processes each tool can support. A rubric will be provided to help score and compare software in categories including ease-of-use, ability to adapt with you as you grow and change, working well with other tools, and cost.
You will leave this session with a planning sheet and the understanding to continue developing a robust technology plan.

Session 7: 1:40 pm-2:55 pm
Presented by AJ Crowell & Jeannie Hale, Essential Education
Relationships are the "glue" of student retention holding all other facets together. Relationships answer and facilitate the how, why, and where of working with and educating adults. To learn who adult students are, we must look beyond statistics on a page and delve into personal values, needs, and goals. The net result is that students tend to have a greater sense of accountability, are more comfortable asking questions, and possess the confidence to take risks and effectively master new skills.
Our session will focus on understanding the powerful link between interpersonal relationships and program retention, as well developing strategies for multiple types of classroom relationships. Finally, we'll explore practical activities to leverage positive connections and promote program continuance.
