Motivating Adult Learners to Persist: LINCS Training

Join us on September 10, 2024, to kick off a very special Cohort provided by LINCS!

***DISCLAIMER***

This plan is still under consideration by OCTAE and has not been confirmed.

In partnership with the Oklahoma Literacy Coalition, the Oklahoma CareerTech works to plan, prepare, and deliver coordinated professional development events and activities each fiscal year. The topic of motivating adult learners is important to the state because research shows that teachers who are adept at motivating their students achieve higher levels of engagement and achievement. Also, students who understand their motivation are more likely to take ownership of their learning and show higher workplace productivity levels. Developing motivation with students also helps them preserve through the trials and tribulations in the adult education classroom.

The training will start with two 75-minute in-person sessions at Oklahoma’s 2024 Adult Education & Literacy Conference in Oklahoma City that will introduce participants to some of the research around strategies related to motivating adult learners, provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their successes and challenges, and share additional ideas for strategies, tools, and resources, including those highlighted in the recent LINCS webinars and NRS trainings.

Following the synchronous training, participants will have two options for continued learning. Participants will either attend the live webinars or participate in the LINCS self-paced courses consisting of the 3 hour and 30-minute session “Motivating Adult Learners to Persist” and the 2 hour and 30-minute LINCS self-paced course title “Supporting Learners to Sustain and Persist Beyond Enrollment”. Both modalities will be available so that the important content can be accessed by a larger number of participants based on what they know about the instructors in their state.

Additionally, all participants will engage in a facilitator-led Community of Practice (CoP) where they can interact with their colleagues, regardless of which the two modalities they participate in, and learn from the facilitator. The facilitator will host discussions in the CoP related to content from the self-paced courses, and the CoP will also be available as a space for additional communication and sharing of resources and tools throughout the training.

Participants will then demonstrate evidence of learning by planning, implementing, and reflecting on at least two strategies for motivating adult learners to persist that incorporate what they learned from the live training, the self-direct courses, and/or the facilitator-hosted Community of Practice.

At the end of the training, participants will come together for a final webinar where they will reflect on their learning, plan for continued learning and collaboration with colleagues around motivating adult learners to persist and be encouraged to join the LINCS Teaching and Learning community group, creating an informal professional learning community for continued collegial thought sharing and crowdsourcing opportunities.
