Why do some students quit after failing a test? Why do other students use failure as motivation to work harder? How a student responds to failure can make the difference between graduating and dropping out.
Students with a Fixed Mindset believe that they either have the ability to achieve something or they don't. Once they fail, they quit trying because they just don't have those skills. Students with a Growth Mindset believe their skills can be developed, that their IQ is not a fixed number. These students use failure as a stepping stone to success. In this seminar, participants will learn how to use the Growth Mindset Theory in their classrooms. Students need to know how to learn and grow from failure so they are empowered to step out of their comfort zone and see challenges as opportunities.

Life is filled with challenging experiences from beginning to end. People are facing issues with work and personal relationships, performance, expectations, finances, health and more. This can create a mix of emotions from fear, frustration and distress to overwhelm. These emotions can last as long as they are allowed to. The Drive Your Car concept can bring clarity to one’s true desires, help them recognize their internal strengths and understand what is possible and how to move forward with confidence in life.
This presentation focuses on using an analogy that everyone is familiar with to understand their body, heart, brain and how they work together and against each other. The concept of a CAR (body), a DRIVER (self) and a MAP (thought processing tool) is easy to understand, and audiences have found it very helpful and effective.

Reading is a skill that is important for learners across all instructional levels and subjects; however, not all Adult Education instructors have had specialized training in how to teach reading at all or specifically, academic reading across the disciplines. For our learners to be successful in establishing foundational skills and a solid academic knowledge base, it is important to train teachers in the “how-to” of teaching not only basic reading skills but also the more advanced skills needed to help the struggling readers. The struggling readers are those who miss the GED by just a few points in any subject that is reading intensive like science, social studies, literature and even math. While reading is an important subject, a student-centered approach of integrating writing as a part reading will be included in the training. Handouts will be provided.
