The May Symposium: Focusing on Adult Learners will be on May 5 from 10 PM to 2 PM inside the Duncan First United Methodist Church. The church is located at 2300 N Country Club Drive Rd, Duncan, OK 73533.

This one-day event on May 5th is a great opportunity for professional development and networking. It is for teachers, tutors, volunteers, administrators, and anyone interested in learning more about adult learners and/or teaching English Language Learners.

The Duncan Symposium: Focusing on Adult Learners will be held in partnership with the Duncan Area Literacy Council. We will be meeting inside the First United Methodist Church of Duncan, 2300 N Country Club Rd.

Your registration includes lunch. Registration for OLC Individual Members is FREE. Non Members will be $15.

Keynote: Motivating Students in Challenging Times, Alan Dale

This session will look at the adult learner and the challenges our students face when coming back to school. We will discuss the characteristics of the adult learner, different approaches to get the students engaged and the pivotal role the teacher plays in the success of each student.

Alan has served as the Counselor and Coordinator for Murray State College, Adjunct Professor for Murray State College and Oklahoma City Community College, High School Counselor, Assistant High School Principal, Ninth Grade Center Principal, and Director of Community Outreach and Education for Oklahoma City Community College. He brings his vast experience in best practices, education and administration to assist Aztec Software’s clients’ needs implementing a computer-based solution.

English Pronunciation Essentials, presented by Lynn Swanda and Susan Reynolds

Wondering where to start in teaching people to pronounce English? This one-hour class will prioritize and organize pronunciation instruction for you.

Lynn Swanda has been teaching ESL all over the world for 30 years. Locally, she has taught with Whiz Kids and Oklahoma City Community College.

Susan Reynolds has been teaching ESL for 30 years in a variety of settings in Oklahoma as both a volunteer and a professional teacher.

Best Practices Sharing Time, facilitated by Susan Bernard

How many times have you wondered what you could do differently to be more successful? This facilitator-led session is your chance to learn from others who are “walking in your shoes.” Join in the discussion as participants share what is working well in their programs. Please come ready to share something good from your own program as well as any burning questions that you’d like to ask others. This session is for tutors, volunteers, coordinators and directors.

Susan Bernard is the high school equivalency coordinator for the Oklahoma City Community College Adult Learning Center. She is also the author and publisher of the “I’m Not Afraid…Anymore!” series for high school equivalency preparation. Susan began writing in 2003 to provide a simple math book to help her struggling students and then moved on to write for other subjects. It has been her great pleasure over the years to lead students out of the land of fear and into the land of success.
