We all want to help our students identify and achieve their educational goals, and many of us have training on tutoring or teaching adult learners. As teachers, we follow a process of structured & direct instruction and assessment.
Knowing that adult learners function differently from children, it can be more motivational and effective to consider your connection to the learner as less than the “teacher, and more as a ‘coach.’
This presentation will focus on shifting your teaching skills toward coaching your students. We will talk about how coaching entails more individual support, goal setting & achievement of those goals, improved problem solving, all of which can better motivate your students to achieve their personal goals.

Adult education brings unique challenges and opportunities. Learners often balance work, family, and finances alongside school, making engagement and retention more complex. Success requires more than a strong curriculum—it demands connection, relevance, and respect. This session explores how building strong teacher-student and student-student relationships, along with offering adult learners meaningful choices, can transform classroom dynamics. These strategies not only boost motivation and persistence but also create inclusive, student-centered environments. This session will cover understanding and speaking to the classroom demographic by breaking the ice with engaging activities (age-appropriate learning games, poems, tongue twisters, etc.). The focus will be on student retention through engagement for any class, but especially the ESL/ELL population. When the instructor incorporates student WIIFMs -"what's in it for me?"- into lessons, they can implement practical application of the information learned in a fun and engaging way. This session will also showcase the importance of "getting a win" and consistent encouragement (as it is earned). Achieving mutual respect and trust early in the class with fun and positive experiences will promote better engagement with the students and have a positive impact on retention in the classroom.
We will have a few simple games we will play with the audience and a slide show to support the information.

Adult education teachers come from diverse educational backgrounds and many without any training to teach reading skills. To help the struggling reader, teachers need to know what are the most important skills that will help learners make better scores across academic subjects. We will preview several strategies of teaching academic reading that will help teachers provide learners with a better understanding of how to approach science, social studies and other academic subjects and will give learners a more organized way to approach learning course content. Active learning strategies presented in this session will help participants understand the transition from "learning to read to reading to learn“.

Did you know English learners' brains are wired to hear the sounds of English through their first language?
Building sound awareness helps bridge this gap. Sound awareness helps develop a student’s pronunciation and reading skills, eventually leading them to hear and produce English sounds that are not in their first language.
In this 60-minute workshop we will…
-practice sound awareness
-discover the vowel sounds of English
-talk about these vowel sounds in simple language
Join us for an exploration of the basic foundation of Color Vowel®, an approach supported by brain-based research, using a discovery method through hands-on sound awareness activities that can be quickly integrated into your ESL classroom.
Through sound awareness, Color Vowel® organizes and names the vowels of English in a way that is easy to talk about the sounds. Teachers can address these sounds for feedback, and students can easily ask questions and engage in discussions about English vowel sounds.

Our students have trauma in their past and often in their present. When we learn to recognize how trauma is adversely affecting our students, we can teach them more effectively. We will examine resources, skills, and knowledge that will improve your classroom environment. You will also develop a greater understanding of yourself and how your nervous system affects your teaching (and your life). If you feel like you have too much to do and cannot add something else, then this workshop is for you! Through data, real stories, and actionable strategies, you’ll see how building English skills unlocks confidence and opportunity. Mastering English isn’t just about passing a test—it’s about navigating complex pathways to residency, or overcoming legal and cultural barriers, succeeding in college and thriving in the workplace.
Grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing don’t just impact academic scores—they shape how clearly and confidently students communicate across all areas of life. This challenges the old idea of English as a “second language.”
English is the language of access, advancement, and connection. Labeling it “ESL” can unintentionally downplay its urgency—for both non-native and native speakers. Poor grammar and limited vocabulary can close as many doors as a language barrier.
You’ll leave with tools and perspective to help yourself or others harness the power of language for measurable achievement.
Because when learners find their voice, they find their way.

Short Abstract: Learn about the unique needs of Literacy Learners and how to tailor your teaching for ESL students who do not have strong literacy skills in their home languages.
Long Abstract: ESL students’ home languages are considered linguistic assets that teachers can build upon. But, what happens when students have limited literacy in their home language due to war, poverty, refugee status, etc.? These literacy students are sometimes referred to as SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) and often require additional support, as they often do not have foundational literacy skills to transfer from one language to another.
In this session, we will learn about the unique needs of literacy learners and how their educational backgrounds impact language acquisition. We will also consider ways that ESL teachers can provide instructional scaffolds and supports to accommodate literacy students. While examples from Cambridge Ventures curriculum will be given
